The "M" Technique
What is the "M"Technique?
The ‘M’ Technique® was developed by Jane Buckle, Ph. D., M.A., R.N., Cert. Ed. as a means of holistic communication. She was a former ICU nurse in London and was looking for a way to help her critically ill patients feel the power of the human touch. She developed the ‘M’ Technique® to put the “care” back into healthcare.
It is a gentle and repetitive therapeutic touch treatment that can help anyone with relaxation, especially those who for whatever reason cannot or do not want to have a traditional massage.
The ‘M’ technique uses a series of stroking movements performed in a set sequence a set number of times.
This technique uses a set pressure which is very gentle but not so gentle that it tickles! The strokes are slow and steady and unlike traditional massage, the. The pressure and speed remain the same throughout the treatment
Each movement and sequence is done in a distinctive pattern that is never modified. Each stroke, within each movement, is repeated three times and every movement is at the same pressure, a very gentle therapeutic touch.

How can the "M" Technique
The Power Of Three
The idea behind the repetition is to build confidence and reduce anxiety working on the skin receptors and sending signals to the brain
The first stroke is paid attention to. You dont know what to expect so you are more aware of what is going on.
The second time, the stroke is more familar and you are starting to relax.
By the third stroke, you know what to expect and are able to completely relax.
Using the power of three, you can be lulled into into a deep state of relaxation in a very short period of time.
Who can it help?
The technique has been described as physical hypnotherapy, ‘a kind of meditation’ and a ‘spiritual dance’.
Although initially created to to treat the very fragile, critically ill, or actively dying patient, the technique is suitable for everyone looking for relaxation and stress relief, and is a great combination with reiki.
Different from massage
Whilst a traditional massage can help with relaxation, a lot of the movements are quite deep and aimed at working through knots in muscles to reduce tension in that way.
The pressure changes depending on the area of the body and movements adapted to what is needed.
The “M” Technique is gentle and does not waiver in pressure and the movements are structured. It promotes relaxation through this therapeutic touch.
The Treatment
The technique can cover either hands and arms, legs and feet, head and face.
It is possible to have a combination or two or three options, as well as including reiki.
I use grapeseed oil in my treatments as it helps to move the skin without dragging.
